VP Kalairajan joins DMK, says more will come out of AMMK

TTV Dhinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam's senior leader V P Kalairajan today met DMK president M K Stalin and enrolled himself in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He called on Stalin in Trichy and became a member of the DMK. Speaking to the media, he said more functionaries will come out of AMMK soon and join the DMK.

A former MLA, Kalairajan was a strongman in the ruling AIADMK, before he joined the AMMK. On Wednesday night, ahead of Kalairajan's defection to the DMK, Dhinakaran expelled him from the AMMK. Only recently, former Minister V Senthil Balaji quit AMMK and joined the DMK in the presence of Stalin, it may be recalled. Kalairajan was a member of the 13th and 14th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assemblies from the Theagaraya Nagar constituency in Chennai district. He represented the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party.

Kalairajan won the Theagaraya Nagar constituency as an AIADMK candidate in the 2006 and 2011 state assembly elections. The elections of 2016 resulted in Kalairajan's constituency being won by B. Sathyanarayanan of the AIADMK. He was one of thirteen AIADMK MLAs in the Greater Chennai area who were deselected by the party, apparently in an attempt to thwart a potential anti-incumbency backlash from the electorate following the flooding.
