Velmurugan attacks toll plaza staff once again

Known for assaulting staff members of a toll plaza last year, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) party leader T Velmurugan, an alliance partner of the DMK, has once again involved in once such act. In a latest video which has gone viral on social media, Velmurugan and his supporters were seen involved in an argument with a toll plaza staff and then assaulting him. In 2018, over 500 members of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) hit the streets in protests in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, and targeted the Ulundhurpettai toll booths.

Led by party chief former PMK MLA Panruti T Velmurugan, protesters smashed the toll plaza to bits, broke barricades and also smashed the glass where toll collectors sit. A huge number of protesters could be seen walking with flags and chanting slogans, and some demonstrators engaged in a tussle with the police. Ulundurpet police had already recorded cases against him for harming public property and disturbing public peace. On May 26 last year, Velmurugan visited the violence hit Thoothukudi district. He was arrested by the Neyveli police at Thoothukudi airport and remanded to judicial custody at Puzhal prison, sources added.

Velmurugan recently claimed that only North Indians were being given preference for appointments to vacancies in Central government organisations in Tamil Nadu.
