Last minute rush is expected at election offices across Tamil Nadu, as today is the last day to file nominations for the April 18 Lok Sabha elections and by-poll to 18 Assembly constituencies.On Monday, Tamil Nadu saw brisk filing of nominations by key contestants for the state's 39 Lok Sabha seats and the bypolls for 18 assembly seats. Contestants belonging to the AIADMK-led front that includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, the PMK, the DMDK, the NJP, the PT and the TMC, as well as the DMK-led front comprising of Congress, the IUML, the VCK, the MDMK, the CPI, the CPI-M, the IJK and the KDMK filed their nominations.
Officials said that all the arrangements to face last-minute rush, the last day for filing of nominations, have been made. They said said the ROs and Assistant ROs had been given training in scrutinising the nominations, the process which would begin on Wednesday. Recently, on the first day of filing of nominations for the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly bypolls, 22 candidates — either independents or representatives of little known parties — filed their nominations across the State on Tuesday.
Chennai North and Chennai South constituencies received four and three nominations respectively, while in Tirupur and Ramanathapuram constituencies two candidates filed their papers. Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Madurai, Theni and Tirunelveli constituencies saw one candidate each filing nomination.
