TN govt files plea in SC to allow Chennai-Salem highway

The Tamil Nadu government today moved the Supreme Court against an order issued by the Madras High Court staying land acquisition for Chennai-Salem eight way project. Recently, tthe Madras High Court quashed the land acquisition proceedings for the controversial eight-way lane between Chennai and Salem.

Farmers in five districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem were up in arms against the Rs 7,500 crore project that would have cut through farmlands and ecologically-sensitive forest area. They were of the view that the expressway is not needed since there are three highways that connect Salem with Chennai.

Recently, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had said that no harm will be done in the construction of the Chennai-Salem expressway. He said that people will be benefitted by the 8-lane expressway.
