Tight race in local body elections, DMK slightly ahead

The counting of votes for the rural local body elections in Tamil Nadu entered the second day today, with the process being continued throughout the night. The counting is being done amid tight security, with CCTV cameras streaming live proceedings at the counting centres.While initial trends on Thursday saw a see-saw battle between DMK and AIADMK, the DMK has surged ahead and is leading in both Panchayat Unions and District Panchayats today. Out of 5,067 Panchayat Unions, the DMK-led alliance is leading in 2131 places. In 515 District Panchayats, the DMK-led alliance is leading in 234 places.The election, which had been held in two phases on December 27 and 30 was conducted in rural Tamil Nadu to elect 655 district ward panchayat members, 6,471 panchayat union ward members, 12,524 village panchayat presidents, and 99,324 village panchayat ward members.
