Thevar Jayanthi: CM, political leaders pay tribute

Today is Thevar Jayanthi, the 112th birth anniversary of Muthuramalinga Thevar is celebrated as Thevar Jayanthi across the state.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam, State Ministers, DMK chief M K Stalin and leaders of political parties garlanded his statue at Goripalayam in Madurai today.

Thousands visited Thevar's memorial and special poojas were performed on the occasion.Edappadi K Palaniswami, O Panneerselvam, Sellur Raju and many ministers garlanded the statue. DMK president, MK Stalin also paid respects to Muthuramalinga Thevar at Goripalayam, Madurai. He was accompanied by MLAs and party functionaries from southern districts.

Security has been tightened in Madurai and over 8000 cops have been deployed for the security. Traffic restrictions have been put in place. TASMAC shops have been closed for five days.
Thevar Jayanthi takes place at the samadhi (burial place) of Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Thevar, located at some 50 miles distance from Madurai. Pilgrims gather to take part in the ceremonies at the samadhi. In later years the ceremony at the samadhi has begun to attract prominent politicians.

Muthuramalinga Thevar was a socialist and colleague of Subhas Chandra Bose who became the leader of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB), of which he was national deputy chairman from 1952. He was elected three times to the national Parliament. The pillars of Thevar's political thought were spiritualism, nationalism and anti-imperialism.
