Tamil Nadu Government cancels Petroleum Investment Zone in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam

On July 19, 2017, the Government of India announced to its order to set up petrochemical investment in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.This project has contributed to the damaging effect of 56 thousand 500 acres of land in 45 villages in districts of Cuddalore and Nagai.

Once the Government of Tamil Nadu announced this plan, the people and farmers of 45 villages in Cuddalore and Nagai districts were bitterly opposed. On August 5, 2017, a protest was held in Cuddalore and Nagai districts demanding the cancellation of the Petroleum Investment Zone notification, which would affect 45 villages and farmers.

Yesterday a resolution was passed by the TN assembly announced part of the delta region as Protected Agricultural Zone (PAZ) as a special agricultural zone. There were plenty of favorable opinions and criticisms about it.

Today, 22 February, the government of Tamil Nadu cancels its order and intentionally took the decision after passing a resolution on the Protected Agricultural Zone in the assembly yesterday. Farmers from 45 villages have welcomed the announcement of cancelling petroleum investment project by the government of Tamil Nadu.
