23 years ago on 12 July released Kadhal Kottai. No doubt this week in Blockbuster Friday, we will talk about Kadhal Kottai. The National award winning movie under best regional film category oozed with love and romance. Directed by Agathiyan, it was the first biggest blockbuster for Thala Ajith. And Devyani rose to stardomn after Kadhal Kottai. Produced by Sivasakthi Pandian, the movie was popular for songs by Deva. It was the longest running hit for Ajith in a single screen. In Chennai, it saw a 365 day run in Devi Cinemas.

A bubbly young Ajith plays a love-lorn youth Suriya who falls in love Kamali (Devayani) with a girl, he had not seen. Their only correspondence was through letters. Devayani as Kamali was tailor-made for the character. The basic theme of the film was inspired from Puranaanooru literature on the relationship between King Kopperum Chozhan and poet Pisirandhaiyar, though they never met but they developed a strong relationship until their deaths.

The movie was shoot in Chennai and Rajasthan. Ajith's cute looks won his women fans in large numbers. Devyani's who played some glampour roles toll then shed that image and appeared in a saree all through. Agathiyan's romantic dialogues and Deva's songs won admiration of all. The movie was successfully remade In many languages. For Ajith fans, Kadhal Kottai will remain close to their hearts forever.

Ajith too had said in one of his interviews that Kadhal Kottai would be a film that will always remain close to his heart. Before Kadhal Kottai, Ajith had acted in the lead in Agathiyan's movie Vaanmathi.
