Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency, which is witnessing a tough contest between Congress' Karti P Chidambaram and BJP's H Raja, who are contesting from the DMK and AIADMK led alliance, respectively. Both Karti and Raja are confident about their victory. "I will sure win. People will support me. I am confident," said Raja, the national secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Karti exuded confidence that the “formidable alliance” led by DMK would work in his favour. Sivaganga had been synonymous with his father former Union Minister P Chidambaram, till he opted out of electoral politics in 2014.
Karti finished fourth in the constituency, but was among the only two Congress candidates in Tamil Nadu who had polled over a lakh votes — the other being H Vasanthakumar in Kanniyakumari.Karti Chidambaram is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI in several cases, including one relating to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore when his father was the Finance Minister. Even his international travel is limited. The Supreme Court had allowed Karti to travel abroad with certain conditions, including that he would not open or close any bank account abroad.
