Polling begins in Vellore LS elections

Polling for the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, which was earlier rescinded due to seizure of large sums of money, began at 0700 hrs on Mondaymorning, amid tight security. An estimated 18.85 lakh voters, including 9.58 lakh women, were expected to exercise their franchise during theday long exercise. Elections are being held to decide the fate of 28 candidates, including three women, though a majority of them being are Independents.

Polling is held in more than 1,553 booths in 690 locations, of which 133 were identified as sensitive. Apart from 3,000 police personnel, 20 companies of central forces were deployed to ensure a free and fair polling. The DMK has re-nominated Kathir as its candiate, while the AIADMK too has renominated NJP founder A C Shanmugham for the seat.
