The Supreme Court today dismissed the adjournment petition filed by Vinay Sharma and Mukesh against the death penalty in the Nirbhaya case. With the dismissal of the petition, it is certain that four of the convicts will be executed on the 22nd.
"This is a big day for me. I had been struggling for the last 7 years. But the biggest day will be 22nd January when they (convicts) will be hanged," Victim’s Mother told the media.
A five-judge Bench of Justices N V Ramana, Arun Mishra, R F Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan heard their appeal and pronounced their judgment. After a Delhi court issued a death warrant in their name and declared January 22 as the date of their execution the two convicts had moved a curative petition in the top court.
On 7 January, the Delhi court issued death warrants against all four convicts-Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31)-and ordered them to be hanged on 22 January at 7 a.m. in Tihar prison, more than seven years after the brutal crime provoked indignation and anger across the country.
