Tamil Nadu government has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying that it is not possible to conduct the local body elections now. In the affidavit, the government has said since the Lok Sabha polls are happening it is not possible to get the electoral rolls from the Election Commission of India and verify it as the officials were busy with the elections. Recently, the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) filed yet another sub-application in the Madras High Court, stating that it will not be possible to issue the notification for the polls before May 31 and that it required three more months’ time.
Only in January, the commission assured a Division Bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and M Sundar that the poll notification will definitely be issued before May 31, on completion of the process of delimitation of constituencies and reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women.
