Mettur dam is to be opened tomorrow (13 August) by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. According to reports quoting government sources, the water level in the dam has reached 85 ft and it has been decided to open its shutters for irrigation purposes from tomorrow. The delta districts of Tamilnadu depend on Cauvery water for cultivation purpose. This time, the water will be used for samba cultivation.
The Chief Minister will open the sluice gates tomorrow. With the dam not opened for irrigation this June, the Kuruvai cultivation in delta region was affected. Following floods in Karnataka, several dams in the State were opened. As a result, over one lakh susecs of water has been reaching Mettur thorugh Hogennakal. Thre are reports of flooding in Cauvery at many places.
The inflow was reportedly 1.10 cusecs at 10 am today. The storage level went up from 67 feet to 82 feet today. Sources say that since the storage capacity is expected to touch 100 feet tomorrow, Mettur dam will be opened for irrigation.
