LS elections: Filing of nominations start in Tamil Nadu

Filing nominations for the Lok Sabha elections as well as the by-elections to 18 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu has started today. The last date for filing nominations is March 26, scrutiny will take place on March 27 and the last date for withdrawing nominations is March 29.

Speaking to the media after chairing a meeting of all DEOs (district electoral officers) and top police officers about the election preparedness, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said nominations would be accepted on the ‘first-come-first-served-basis’ between 10 am and 3 pm at the designated offices of the Returning Officers. Since March 23 and 24 are holidays, nominations would not be accepted on these days.

He added: All steps have been taken for smooth filing of nominations from Tuesday. Candidates have to file sworn affidavits and income tax returns for five years along with the nominations."Only 4 people will be allowed to accompany the candidate while filing nomination papers. Access for media will be decided on a case-to-case basis. We will videograph the entire process." The states where polls will be held in the second phase include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura, UP, West Bengal and Puducherry.
