Kaanum Pongal: 20,000 cops for security in Chennai

Kaanum Pongal, the last day of Pongal celebrations, is tomorrow. Since people are expected to throng public places in large numbers, the Greater Chennai city police have come up with a detailed plan. According to sources, 20,000 police personnel will maintain vigil all over the city, including places like Vandalur zoo, Marina beach, Besant Nagar beach, theme parks, malls and cinema theatres.

Police Commissioner, A K Viswanathan, had a detailed meeting with officials and a plan has been devised. Apart from physical deployment of police personnel in uniform and in plain clothes, various other measures are being put in place to ensure that tight vigil is maintained at all places. Visitors are not allowed to bathe in the sea and to prevent this, the entire stretch from Light House to Labour Statue is barricaded with wooden fencing.

A few days ago, a Children's Road Safety gallery, which  also houses a Robot called 'Rodeo', which would inculcate road safety rules among children, was inaugurated by Viswanathan. Traffic rules to be followed on the roads, traffic signs, road safety traffic equipment, its benefits and placards on road safety, were housed in the Gallery, which was set up by Media Max, the Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI) and S P Robotic Works.
