HC stays distribution of Rs 1000 to ration card holders

The Madras High Court today ordered a stay on distribution of Rs 1000 to ration card holders across the State. The court said insted of all, it should be given only to those who coe under Below Poevrty Line. A Coimbatore-based activist has approached the Madras high court to restrain the Tamil Nadu government from disbursing a Pongal gift of Rs 1,000 to all ration card holders irrespective of their financial status. Activist J Daniel Jesudass alleged that the government’s decision was irrational and unmindful.

All ration card-holders in the State would get Rs 1,000 from the government as Pongal gift, Governor Banwarilal Purohit announced during his customary address on the first day of the Assembly in 2019 on Wednesday, even as the Opposition parties, led by DMK president MK Stalin, staged a walkout. The Pongal gift for 2.01 crore family cardholders in the State.
