Story written by Madhu Muttam and directed by Fazil, the National Award-winning film is set in a traditional joint family. It had Suresh Gopi, Mohanlal and Shobana in lead roles. Actress Shobhana won her first National Award for this film.
Speaking about the impact of the film on her own career, Shobana wrote, “It’s the mega hit film Manichitrathazhu's 27th birthday. Not only a blockbuster, it is also a text book for film-making. Can’t deny it has made a huge impact on the journey of my life and still... There is no day that goes by when I am not reminded of Nagavalli.. All the best of luck to Shri Fazil - the creator.”
The film completed 319 days of run in a theatre in Kerala. And also Manichitrathazhu was remade in four languages – in Kannada as Apthamitra, in Tamil as Chandramukhi, in Bengali as Rajmohol and in Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiyaa – all being commercially successful.
