Govt all geared up to meet Cyclone Fani, severe warning issued

Central and State governments are geared up to handle Cyclone Fani. The possibility of cyclonic storm Fani wreaking havoc in Andhra Pradesh is giving government officials tense moments as it is predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. Cyclone Fani, which is brewing over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean, is very likely to intensify into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” with wind speed reaching up to 200 kmph. It is very likely to move northwestwards till the evening of May one and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards gradually.

Under its inflouence, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu. From tomorrow, thunderstorm with gusty winds (40-50 Kmph) and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Warning Division said 'Fani' currently lays over 745 kilometres east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 1,050 kilometres southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 1,230 kilometres south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh).
