Foreign currencies worth Rs. 99.5 lakhs seized at Chennai airport

Customs officials have seized foreign currencies to the tune of Rs 99.5 lakh from a Dubai-bound Sri Lankan passenger, who arrived from Colombo, at the Chennai international airport. A release from the office of the Commissioner  of customs here said based on specific information a Srilankan transit passenger who had arrived fromColombo and was bound for Dubai by Indigo flight was intercepted at the departure lounge before security check by AIU officers on suspicion ofcarrying foreign currency.

As he gave evasive replies during interrogation, the officials searched his hand baggage and found a plastic cover containing assorted foreign currencies including Euros, Kuwaiti Dinars, and UAE Dirhams in various denominations, totally valued at Rs. 99.5 lakhs.
