Following the seizure of Rs 11.5 crore cash from a warehouse in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district, the Election Commission (EC) is expected to decide the issue of cancelling the election in the Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday, reports said. Income Tax officials last week seized the cash from a godown that allegedly belonged to DMK leader Poonjolai Srinivasan, a close aide of party treasurer Durai Murugan. The officials are investigating the source of the money.
Rashtrapati Bhavan received the EC’s proposal Monday night. The recommendation, it is learnt, will be shared with the Law Ministry for its views on Tuesday. However, cancellation is imminent since the President, in this case, has little choice but to accept the EC’s proposal. Since the president signs the notification for Lok Sabha elections, it is he who rescinds it. The decision came after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from the DMK candidate's office a few days ago.
