With just months to go for the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India today released voters list of Tamil Nadu. While Chief Electoral Officer Sathyapradha Sahu released the overall list at the Secretariat in Chennai, District Collectors and District Election Officers released the lists in their respective ares. As per the fresh list, there are 5,91,23,197 voters in the State. A total of 4.50 lakh new voters have been enrolled and 5,62,937 have been removed due to death and change of place. There are 2,92,56,960 men, 2,98,60,765 women and 5,472 persons from the third gender.
As far as Chennai is concerned, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan released the list. There are are 37,91,126 voters comprising of 18,83,898 men, 19,34,078 women and 932 third gender. As per the directions of the Election Commission of India the Special Summary Revision, 2019 was underway. The draft rolls were published on 01.09.2018 and the claims of objections were received from 01.09.2018 to 31.10.2018.
As per the extended schedule, the Election Commission of India had prescribed that the final rolls should be published on 21.01.2019. In order to prepare error-free Electoral Rolls, two meetings of Booth Level Officers and Booth Level Agents of the recognised political parties were conducted so as to exchange the inputs/feedback regarding inclusions and deletions. All these activities require some more time and hence the Election Commission of India has permitted to publish the final Electoral Rolls on 31.01.2019 (today).
