College students take step towards 'zero plastic'

The final year students of the Department of Public Relations, Stella Maris College, Chennai, have launched their Campaign, ST0P – Step Towards Zero Plastic on campus. The month – long campaign aims at creating an awareness among the target audiences about the ban announced by the Tamil Nadu State Government and sensitize them about responsible segregation and disposal of plastic waste.

The campaign was inaugurated by Vidya Amarnath, Director, Patterson Energy Pvt. Ltd and the Guest of Honor Nityanand Jayaraman, Journalist turned activist and environmentalist. The campaign that looks at an action-based response from the audiences in moving towards alternate resources that can be used to minimize the use of plastics in our daily lives, would encompass a lot of activities in the months of January and February 2019 such as presentations, interactions with students of 10 colleges and 20 private and public schools, online contests, Junk-art competition, flash-mob, short-film screening.

Recently, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board organised a campaign, which was aimed at sensitising residents, RWAs, students, etc on the hazards of burning certain items like rubber and plastics. On the eve of Bhogi, a patrol was arranged in association with the Department of Police. Thirty teams were formed to inspect 15 zones in the city.
