Classic Wednesday : Mann Vasanai - Son of the soil that made it big

Even as actress Revathy completes 36 years in Tamil cinema and awaits the release of her movie Jackpot in which she shares screen with Jyothika, in today's Classic Wednesday, lets take a look back at Mann Vasanai, released in 1983, which was the maiden venture of Revathy and Pandian. Directed by Bharathiraja and music composed by Ilayaraja, it is still a popular film among movie-lovers. Vinu Chakravarthy, Ganthimathi, and Y Vijaya play other supporting roles.

The crux of the story is about love, feud and circumstances that lead a young man to abandon his village and lover and head to the armed forces. Upon his return, his lover realises that things are never going to be the same again. Pandiyan played Veeranna and Revathi as Muthupechi. The innocent looks of Revathy instant caught the admiration of masses. She was celebrated debutant then and saw films come in large numbers.

She starred opposite almost all top artistes including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan among others then. Mann Vasanai was the most celebrated film that won many awards. The song Pothi Vacha is still the chartbuster in Tamil cinema. Produced by Chithra Ramu, it had cinematography. Bharathiraja's tryst with villages continued with Manna Vasanai. And Revathy did few more films with him.
