AIADMK MLAs move Supreme Court against Speaker's notice

Two MLAs of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), E Rathinasabapathy (Aranthangi), V T Kalaiselvan (Vriddhachalam), have moved the Supreme Court, challenging the issue of show cause notice by Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal and seeking stay on disqualification proceedings against them. Rathinasabapathy and Kalaiselvan said they were in receipt of the notice from the speaker, seeking an explanation for alleged anti-party activities.

"We have filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the notice of Speaker Dhanapal. It has been admitted and the matter is coming up for hearing on May 6," Kalaiselvan said. The notices come in the midst of by-elections to 22 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. Of the 22 vacancies, 18 were triggered due to disqualification of the MLAs by the Speaker in 2017, which was later upheld by the Madras High Court in 2018.
