932 nominations accepted in TN for LS polls: CEO

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo has said out of the 1587 applications received, 932 nominations were accepted for Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said out of the 518 nominations received, 305 applications have been accepted for the 18 Assembly constituencies bypoll have been accepted.

He said 655 nominations and 213 applications for the Lok Sabha and bypolls were rejected respectively. "With 43 nominations Karur had the maximum number of applications accepted and Nilgiri had the minimum with 10. As far as bypolls are concerned in Perambur 59 applications have been accepted and only eight nominations were approved for Gudiyatham," he added.

With Tuesday being the last day to file nominations, about 1,227 candidates including 1,089 men, have filed their papers for the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the State. According to CEO Satyabrata Sahoo, in addition, about 485 persons including 411 men filed their nominations for the by-election to 18 Assembly constituencies.

Sahoo said the State police had identified 7,316 polling booths as ‘sensitive’ as well as ‘vulnerable’. The number of such booths may go up as by-elections to 18 Assembly constituencies are also being held along with the Lok Sabha elections.
