Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam were at the forefront of the 103rd birth anniversary celebrations of AIADMK founder, the late M G Ramachandran, in the state today.They garlanded a statue of Ramachandran, a former matinee idol who later went on to become the Chief Minister, at the AIADMK headquarters here.
Leaders of AIADMK and staff elsewhere in the state also paid floral tributes to MGR portraits at party offices.
A charismatic actor, MGR, the recipient of Bharat Ratna, was the iconic name of Tamil cinema. After breaking away from the DMK following disagreements with its president M Karunanidhi, he made a name for himself in state politics and formed AIADMK in 1972.
Ramachandran was known for his brilliant acting and songs preaching principles and virtues, he ruled the state from 1977 until his death in 1987.
